Music Festival 2016


Bhavan’s Chennai Kendra’s Cultural Festival Inaugurated on Sunday, 20th November 2016 at its Mylapore premises by Sri R. Seshasayee, Chairman, Infosys Limited. . Smt. Vishakha Hari, an eminent Harikatha Exponent and Smt. Gayathri Venkataraghavan, a leading Carnatic Vocalist were awarded the Bhavan’s P. Obul Reddy and P. Gnanambal Life Time Achievement Awards instituted by Sri P. Vijaykumar Reddy and Dr. Preetha Reddy. The Awards which carried a purse of Rs. 1 lakh, a medallion, a citation and a shawl were presented in a colourful function held at Bhavan’s Dr. Preetha Reddy Auditorium. Sri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavan’s Chennai Kendra Presided ouver the function Sri S.S. Rajsekar, Bhavan’s Kala Kendra Sub-Committee Chairman welcomed the gathering .. Smt. Vishakha Hari and Smt. Gayathri Venkataraghavan said that they are very happy to receive the Bhavan’s Life Time Achievement Award which is of immense value to her especially when it is being received during the Centenary Year of MS Subbulakshmi in their acceptance speech . The Inaugural Festival concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Sri K.N. Ramaswamy, Director, Bhavan’s Chennai. The function was followed by Hari katha by Vishakha Hari.

The convocation of Bhavan’s Gandhi Institute was held on 15.11.2016. Shri Irai Anbu Principal Secretary to Govt of Tamilnadu was the chief Guest and distributed the certificates to the Senior Citizens and students . Sri L Sabaretnam Chairman Chennai Kendra presided over the function. Sri K.N.Ramaswami Director Chennai Kendra and Chief Zonal coordinator Southern Zone of the Gandhi Institute briefed about salient features of the Institute. Sri Praveen Service provider briefed about the courses conducted at the Institute. Sri R.Vaidyanathan Director Chennai Kendra proposed vote of Thanks. The function ended with National Anthem

123rd Jayanthi of His Holiness Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati (Sage of Kanchi ) was celebrated in association with Veda Pata Nidhi Trust on 22nd May 2016 at Bhavan’s Dr. Preetha Reddy Auditorium under the auspices of Neela Subramanian Endowment. Veda Parayan and honouring the Vedic Pundits who chanted veda parayanam were honoured. This was followed by a Tamil Drama “ Sri Bagavan Nama Bodendral ” Staged by Bombay Gnanam & Mahalakshmi Ladies Drama Group.

Bhavans Book Release - 05.04.2016


“ The Bhavan’s Publications “ Rich Tradition Richer Heritage “ authored by the Bhavan’s President, Sri Surendralal G. Mehta and Living in Rhythm with Nature, Simple Steps to Holistic Health authored by Smt. Prema Raghavan were released on 5th April 2016 at Bhavan’s Dr. Preetha Reddy Auditorium at Mylapore. Padma Bhushan Professor B.M. Hegde, Former Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University and Chairman, Bhavan’s Mangalore Kendra released the books and Sri N. Ravi, Director, Kasturi & Sons ( The Hindu ) and Vice-Chairman, Bhavan’s Chennai Kendra received the First Copies. Smt. Prema Raghavan was also present on the inaugural function. Sri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavan’s Chennai Kendra Presided. There was a Musical Discourse “ Sri Rama Nama Prabhavam “ by Ms. Sindhujha Chandramouli & Troupe after the function

Vedic Pundits chanted three vedas were honoured. This was followed by Musicla tribute to sage of Kanchi by Bramhasri Ganesh Sarma with J.B.Keerthana (vocal) and J.B.Sruthisagar (Violin) .Shri L Sabaretnam Chairman Chennai Kendra graced the Occasion .

Inauguration of Bhavan’s Naatya Utsav - 11.12.2015

As a part of the Kendra’s Cultural Festival, the “Naatya Utsav 2015” was inaugurated at Bhavan’s TAG Auditorium ( Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidayshram Complex), Kilpauk, on Saturday, 11th December 2015 by Ms Padma Subramaniam was the Chief Guest and Presented the Awards. Sri Murali of Sri Krishna Sweets and Kendra committee member was the Guest of Honour. Kendra Chairman, Sri L. Sabaretnam presided over the function. Padmabhushan Awardee Ms. Shobana received the Life Time Achievement Award consisting of a cash award of Rs. 1 lakh, a Memento, a Shawl and a Citation on this occasion. The inaugural function was followed by a Bharatanatyam recital by Ms. Shobana.



Navarathri inauguration 12.10.2015

The Bhavan organised Navaratri Music Festival between 12th October 2015 and 22nd October 2015. The Inaugural function was held on 12th October 2015 at 6.00 pm at Bhavan’s Dr. Preetha Reddy Auditorium. Sri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavan’s Chennai Kendra inaugurated the festival. Sri M. Murali, Managing Director of Sri Krishna Sweets was the Guest of Honour. This was followed by a thematic presentation by Cuddalore S.J. Jananiy ( Lyrics by Dr. Bhavani Jayanthi ) on “NAVA DURGA”.

The 168th Saint Thyagaraja Aradhana Festival was organized on Saturday, 10th January, 2015.: Various artists of Ramjhi’s Isai Mazhalai Group rendered Saint Thiagaraja’s Kritis and Pancharatna Kritis. This was followed by Drama “ Anubhava Aaradhanai” by Kalanilayam. : Story and Concept : Swaminatha Athreya, Dramatisation : K.S.N. Sundar, Sikkil Gurucharan rendered Kritis. Prasad were distributed .

Inauguration of Bhavans Naatya Utsav 2014 -13.12.2014

As a part of the Kendras Cultural Festival, the Naatya Utsav 2014 was inaugurated at Bhavans TAG Auditorium ( Bhavans Rajaji Vidayshram Complex), Kilpauk, on Saturday, 13th December 2014 by Mr. Phillip A Min, Consul General of the United States of America and Honble Justice Dr. M. Chockalingam, Judicial Member, National Green Tribunal, Southern Zone, Chennai was the Special Guest. Sri K. Parasaran, former Attorney General of India, Member of Parliament and Vice-Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra welcomed the gathering.Kendra Chairman, Sri L. Sabaretnam presided over the function. Padmabhushan Awardee Ms.Alarmel Valli received the Life Time Achievement Award consisting of a cash award of Rs.1 lakh, a Memento, a Shawl and a Citation on this occasion. The Bhavans Cultural Awards 2014 consisting of cash award of Rs.25000/-, Memento, a Shawl and a Citation were presented to Ms. Saashwathi Prabhu (vocal), Ms. Shubashree Ramachandran (vocal), Sri S. Venkatraman (Tambura), Kum. K. Mahathi (Keyboard), Kum. S. Aswini (Mridangam) and Kum. S. Anjani ( Veena), Sri K. Venkatesh and Sri K. Murugan ( Light and Sound Technicians) Sri K.N. Ramaswamy, Director, Bhavans Chennai Kendra proposed the Vote of Thanks. The inaugural function was followed by a Bharatanatyam recital by Ms. Alarmel Valli. The Dance Festival of two weeks duration show cases 37 individual performances comprising of Bharatanatyam, Kutchipudi, Mohiniattam, Kathak, Sastriya and Odissi. A huge gathering attended the Inaugural Function.

The Bhavans Cultural Festival 2014 was inaugurated on 21st November 2014 by Honble Shri Sanjay Kishe Kaul, Chief Justice Madras High Court Chennai. During the function, Smt.Gayathri & Smt. Bombay Jayashri Ramnath were presented the P.Obul Reddy and P.Gnanambal Memorial awards for their life time achievement in music. The gathering was welcomed by Shri S.S.Rajsekar, Chairman of Bhavans Kalakendra Committee and Shri L.Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra presided over the function. Dr.C.V.Krishnaswami, Chairman TAG VHS Diabetic research center was the Guest of Honour. Shri K.N.Ramaswamy, Director, Bhavans Chennai Kendra proposed the vote of thanks. The inaugural function was followed by a carnatic vocal recital by Smt. Bombay Jayashri Ramnath.

The convocation of Bhavans Gandhi Institute of Computer Education and Information Technology ( GICE & IT ) was organized on 15th September 2014 at the Bhavans Dr. Preetha Reddy Auditorium. Sri K.N. Onam Festival Fest in association with Times of India

A Two day Trivonam Fest in association with Times of India to coincide with the Onam Festival was conducted at the Bhavans Chennai Kendra at its Dr.Preetha Reddy Auditorium on 7th& 8th of September 2014. The Festival was inaugurated by Padmasri Smt. BharatiShivaji, a Mohiniattam exponent. Sri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra presided.

Nani A. Palkhivala Lecture on 7th September 2014

A Lecture in memory of Late Nani A. Palkhivala in association with Nani A. Palkhivala Memorial Trust, Mumbai, Palkhivala Foundation, Chennai & Nani Palkhivala Arbitration Centre Chennai was conducted at Bhavans Chennai Kendra on 7th September 2014. Dr. ShashikalaGurpur, Director & Dean Symbiosis Law School, Pune gave a Lecture on INDIAN CULTURAL HERITAGE IN NANI PALKHIVALAS VISION CONTEMPORARY REFLECTIONS . Sri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra presided and recalled Nani A. Palkhivalas contribution to the Nation. Mrs. Swati G. Kapadia, Director, Nani A. Palkhivala Memorial Trust introduced Dr. ShashikalaGurpur. Sri N.L. Raja, Director, Trustee, Palkhivala Foundation delivered the Vote of Thanks. Earlier Sri K.N. Ramaswamy, Director, Bhavans Chennai Kendra welcomed the gathering and recalled Palkhivalas association with the Bhavan. The lecture was followed by an interactive Question and Answer Session.

Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan , East Mada Street, Mylapore in association with NAC Jewellers presented Aadi Bhakthi Vizha 2014 from 30th July 2014 to 7th August 2014. Sri Ananthanarayanan, Managing Director of NAC Jewellers was the Chief Guest. Sri V. Vaidyanathan, Hon. Treasurer, Bhavans Chennai Kendra inaugurated the function. Musical discourses, Literary Discourses and Villu Pattu were held during the period.


Award for Bhavans Auditorium

The Mylapore Academy, a 60 year old renowned Chennai based social organization in its 45th Annual Award Function awarded S. Viswanathan Silver Rolling Trophy for best A/C. Auditorium to the Kendras Dr. Preetha Reddy Auditorium. The panel of judges consisted of many eminent personalities under the Chairmanship of Justice Sri N.V. Balasubramaniam. The Award was presented on 20th July 2014 in a colourful function at Narada Gana Sabha by Dr. T.S. Sridhar, I.A.S., Additional Chief Secretary and Commissioner, Revenue Administration, Government of Tamilnadu.


Maha Periyava Jayanthi

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, East Mada Street, Mylapore in association with Veda Pata Nidhi Trust under the auspicious of Neela Subramanian Endowment celebrated the 121st Jayanthi of His Holiness Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal, (Sage of Kanchi) on 13th June 2014. Honouring the vedic pundits was a part of the celebration. This was followed by a discourse by Sri P. Swaminathan on Maha Periyava Mahimai


Book Release Function held on 29th May 2014

In a function held on 30th May 2014, the following books published under Bhavans Book University were released:
1. A Study of the Hindu Science of Architecture by Dr. N.R. Dave
2. Srividyasara-Prasnottara-Malika by Dr. Goda Venkateswara Sastri
3. Sree Krishnam Bhaja Maanasa by Smt. Parvathi Sankaran and Sri G Sankaran
4. Guru of Gurus by Smt. Indira Ramanathan
Sri N. Ravi, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu and Kendras Vice-Chairman released the books and Justice Sri S. Jagadeesan, former, Judge, Madras High Court and Member Kendra Committee received the first copies. Sri L Sabaretnam, Kendra Chairman presided over the function. All the above books were printed at Chennai as per Bhavans norms and were given as a gift to the Bhavan (cover price of Rs.9.30 lakhs). A large gathering of supporters of the Bhavan and book lovers appreciated Bhavans efforts for bringing out books of everlasting values.


A Free Personality Development programme in association with M.T.S. Academy

A Free Personality Development programme in association with M.T.S. Academy was conducted from 4th May 2014 to 17th May 2014. Many students who joined the class gained knowledge and expressed their happiness.

Inauguration of the Bhavans Dr.Preetha Reddy Auditorium

The renovated state of art auditorium of Bhavans Chennai Kendra at the Mylapore premises was inaugurated on 26th February 2014 by Srimath Swami Gauthamanandaji, President, Ramakrishna Math, Chennai. The Auditorium was named after Dr. Preetha Reddy, Managing Director, Apollo Group of Hospitals. who has come forward with a munificent donation Shri L.Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra presided over the function. Shri N.Ravi, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu and Vice-Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra welcomed the gathering. Shri I.R. Khandwala, Trustee & Hon.Treasurer, Bhavans Mumbai was the Guest of Honour. Dr. C.V. Krishnaswamy, Chairman, TAG-VHS Research centre and Shri T.S.Saravanan, Chief Architect, AAD India Pvt Ltd offered their felicitations.
Swami Gauthamanandaji in his benediction said give culture to the people that will help the individual and society to improve. He also said that it is in these auditoriums, culture is given and received.
In his address, Shri N.Ravi said that the auditorium is a blessing for art and art lovers. It will revive Mylapore as a centre of culture.
Shri L.Sabaretnam in his presidential address stated that this is the 3rd Auditorium which is being renovated during the Bhavans Platinum Jubilee Year and the Kendra has off late stepped up its cultural activities with great support received from Corporates, Artistes & Art Lovers. He also highlighted that this State of Art Auditorium conforming to international standards is perhaps the only one of its kind in Chennai.
Shri T.S.Saravanan, Chief Architect emphasized that they have tried to maintain the cultural value and heritage of the Bhavan and at the same time bring vibrancy through this renovation process.
Dr. C.V.Krishnaswamy said that this Kendra is a great contributor to the cultural world. Dr.Preetha Reddy also participated in the inaugural function.
Shri K.N.Ramaswamy, Director, Bhavans Chennai Kendra proposed a vote of thanks and the inaugural function was preceded by Nadaswaram recital by Seshampatti Sivalingam and followed by a carnatic vocal concert by Padma Vibhushan Awardee Dr.M. Balamuralikrishna.

The Bhavans Naatya Utsav 2013 was inaugurated by Honble Justice Sri P. sathasivam, Chief Justice of India on 14th December 2013 at Bhavans TAG Auditorium, Kilpauk Chennai-10. Sri N. Ravi, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu and Vice-Chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Chennai Kendra welcomed the gathering. Sri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, presided over the function and delivered the Presidential Address. Sri K. Parasaran, former Attorney General of India and Vice-Chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Chennai Kendra offered felicitatations. Sri K.N. Ramaswamy, Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Chennai Kendra proposed the Vote of Thanks. This was followed by a dance recital by Ms. Malavika Sarukkai.
The Utsav was organized by the Bhavan Chennai Kendra in association with Apollo Hospitals Enterprise. The Chief Justice India presented the P. Obul Reddy and P. Gnanambal Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement to Malavika Sarukkai, for her outstanding contribution to Bharatanatyam. The Award carried a purse of one lakh, a medallion and citation. He also presented the Bhavans Cultural Awards of Rs.25000/- each, a medallion and citation to Dr. M. Narmadha(violin), Smt. K. Gayatri (vocal), Sri S.R.G.S. Mohan Doass (Nadaswaram), B. Suchithra (Harikatha) and Master K. Sathyanarayanan (Keyboard).
The entire Naatya Utsav 2013 Festival consisted of 34 dance performances. Artists from various parts of India and Abroad performed during the Function.

The Bhavans Cultural Festival 2013 was inaugurated on 22nd November 2013 by Shri Bharat Joshi, British Deputy High Commissioner. He was accompanied by his wife Smt.Bhakthi Joshi. During the function, Smt. Ranjani & Smt.Gayathri and Shri Thiruvaarur Bhakthavathsalam were presented the P.Obul Reddy and P.Gnanambal Memorial awards for their life time achievement in music. The gathering was welcomed by Shri S.S.Rajsekar, Chairman of Bhavans Kalakendra and Shri L.Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra presided over the function. Shri P.N.Santhanagopal, Director, Bhavans Central Office felicitated the event and Shri K.N.Ramaswamy, Director, Bhavans Chennai Kendra proposed the vote of thanks. The inaugural function was followed by a carnatic vocal recital by Padmashree Awardee Smt Sudha Reghunathan.

Legend cricketer Sachin Tendulkar

The first copy of Bhavans Journal, 15th November, 2013 issue dedicated to Sachin Tendulkar was received from Sri K.N.Ramaswami Director Chennai Kendra by Sri Krishnamachari Srikkant under whose captaincy Sri. Sachin Tendulkar played his first Test Match. Krish Srikkanth complimented the Bhavans efforts in preserving Indian Culture and Traditions and he was very happy to see Bhavan has come out with a special issue on a legend cricketer Sachin Tendulkar

DVD Release Function on Yoga Wellness Concept by Prof. B.M. Hegde

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, East Mada street, Mylapore, Chennai-600 004 released a DVD on 7th October, 2013 on Yoga Wellness Concept authored by Prof. B.M. Hegde. Sri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra presided and released the DVD. Sri N. Sugalchand Jain, Vice Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra and Managing Trustee, Voluntary Health Services received the first copy. Dr. C.V. Krishnaswamy, Chairman, TAG-VHS Diabetes Research Centre introduced Prof. B.M. Hedge to the audience. There was an eight minute DVD presentation. Sri K.N. Ramaswamy, Director, Bhavans Chennai Kendra proposed the Vote of Thanks. This was followed by a Devotional Music Concert by Dayanandea Sisters (Ms. S. Darshana and Ms. T.S. Sowmya ).

The 123rd Jayanthi Mahothsavam of Brahmasri Papanasam Sivan

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, East Mada Street, Mylapore in association with Papanasam Sivan Rasikar Sangam celebrated the 123rd Jayanthi Mahothsavam of Brahmasri Papanasam Sivan on 26th September, 2013. Ninaivanjali Kapali Pancharatnams were rendered by Sivanugraha Group and this was followed by Inauguration. Sri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra who was the Chief Guest distributed the prizes. Padmabhushan Dr. T.V. Gopalakrishnan and Sri R. Krishnaswamy, President, Papanasam Sivan Rasikar Sangam were the Guest of Honour. This was followed by a vocal concert by Smt. S. Sowmya and Party.

Employability Training Programme

Under the auspices of Gandhi Institute of Computer Education and Information Technology, spoken English classes, as a part of the curriculam, were conducted for the economically backward sections of the society by Smt. Jayantasri Chandramouliswar. It was a two months class and the objective was to enable the students to get into a suitable employment. On the concluding day (27th August, 2013), Sri L. Sabaretam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra presided over the function and distributed the certificates. Students in their feedback said they were benefitted from such a course which raised their self confidence.

The 338th Jayanthi Festival of Pujya Sri Narayanatirtha Swamigal in association with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan was celebrated on 19th July 2013 at its premises. The event started with Veda Parayanam by Sri S. Nagaraja Ganapadigal and Party. This was followed by a prayer Selvi N. Shruthi. The Ligiting of Kuthuvillakku was by Smt. Dr. Vidya Ram Pradeep and other dignitaries joined. Sri . L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra was the Chief Guest. Sri V. Vaidyanathan, Patron of the Trust and Hon. Treasurer, Bhavans Chennai Kendra presided over the function. Prof. C.V. Chandrasekar, Guest of honour felicitated BharataNatyam exponent Smt. Leela Samson, former Director, kalakshetra and a former Committee Member of Bhavans Chennai Kendra. Sri N.V. Subramaniam, Trustee delivered the welcome address and Sri A. Theevaram classes

Free Thevaram Classes for a period of ten days from 18th May to 27th May 2013 by Thiruveezhimizhalai S.Kanaka a graduate in Music, D/O Dr.R.Subramaniam at the Bhavans Mylapore Centre. The response to this classes was overwhelming. The classes attracted youngsters and students besides senior citizens. The classes were concluded on good note by distributing participation certificates for all the participants. Sri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra addressed the participants on the concluding day and distributed the certificates. He expressed his happiness that the classes had attracted youngsters and students. He appreciated Kum. Kanaka for her mastery and excellent handling of the class. He also assured that Bhavan shall associate with any programmes conducted to uphold the Indian Culture. Kum. Kanaka was felicitated on this occasion by Sri L. 120th Jayanthi of His Holiness Maha periyaval, Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal ( Sage of Kanchi )

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in association with Veda Pata Nidhi Trust under Neela Subramanian Endowment celebrated the 120th Jayanthi of His Holiness Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal (Sage of Kanchi) on Sunday 26th May 2013 at our premises. Sri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra, Sri K. Parasaran, MP, and Vice-Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra, Sri Sarbeswaran, Secretary, Veda Pata Nidhi Trust and Sri J. Jayaraman, Member, Veda Pata Nidhi Trust were present during this function. The function commenced with Kum. Thiruveezhimizhalai S.Kanaka rendering Mahaperiyaval Ashtothram and was followed by Vedic chanting by Vedic pundits. The vedic pundits were honoured during the function. A musical Tribute by Violin Duo Sri Ganesh and Sri Kumaresh was an added feature of the function.

Convocation of Bhavans Gandhi Institute of Computer Education and Information Technology was held at Sri Venkata Auditorium on the 26th February 2012. Shri. L.Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Chennai Kendra presided over the function and welcomed the gathering. Visit of Dr A.P.J.Abdul Kalam to Bhavan Chennai Kendra

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalamji made a visit to the Bhavans Chennai Kendra in connection with a programme of an interactive session with children from various schools, wherein Bhavan was also partially associated. Dr. Kalamji was received at the venue by Sri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman Bhavans Chennai Kendra and Directors. The Chairman presented a bouquet of flowers to Dr. Kalamji on the stage and the first copy of Bhavans Journal (15th Feb. 2013) covering Twin Celebrations? inauguration at Mumbai was handed over by Sri K.N.Ramaswami, Director, Bhavans Chennai Kendra. Students who are found suitable offered employment with TCS. A programme was arranged on completion of such training on 19/10/2012 . Interactive Dance Festival

Bhavan in association with South Zone Culture Centre (a unit of Ministry of Culture, Government of India ) organized Nrithya Bhaaratham, an Interactive Dance Festival. of four days. The programme was inaugurated by Sri M.M. Rajendran, Former Governor of Orissa on 17th September, 2012. Various types of dances such as Mohiniattam, Kutchipudi, Fusion, etc., by eminent artists were performed during this festival. An interactive quiz programme was also held. The interactive session is being inaugurated by His Excellency, The Governor of Tamilnadu, Sri Rosaiah on 23rd Sept. 2012. Ganesh Darshan an exquisite display of over 3500 Vinayaga idols was organized in association with M/s.Krishna Sweets between 17th and 21st September 2012. These rare miniature are from the collection of Shri M.Murali Managing Director Sri Krishna Sweets spanning three decades.


Drama Festival

Bhavan celebrated Drama Festival between 10th Sept and 13th Sept 2012 at the Mylapore Premises, with Dramas by eminent Stage Artists like Sri YG Mahendra Sri Kathadi Ramamurthy, Sri Crazy Mohan & Madhu Balaji and TV Varadharajen.


The Festival was inaugurated by Kumari Sachu, Chairperson Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nataka Manram , Sri LSabaretnam Chaiarman Bhavan Chennai Kendra presided over the function. Sri Nalli Kuppusamy Chettiar was the Guest of Honour.


TAG Digital Listening Archives

The Bhavans TAG Digital Listening Archives, an initiative in association with TAG Corporation was inaugurated on 12th September, 2012 at its Kendra premises, Mylapore by Sri N. Murali, President, Music Academy & Director, Kasturi & Sons, the publisher of ? The Hindu ?. Sri N. Murali expressing his happiness that sai he could see visible changes in the activities of Bhavan, within the short span of time and congratulated Sri Sabaretnam and his team Sri Chari while briefing about the TAG Digital Listening Archives said that at present the Archives has a collection of 1000 hours of music of eminent singers / composers and has plans to enhance it to 2000 hours. He expressed his happiness to have an archive installed at Mylapore, more so in Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, which is the centre of attraction for all music lovers.


Sri Pappu Venugopal Rao Secretary Music Academy gave his expert comments Sri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra presided over the function. In his presidential address he recalled the ardent love and passion of Mr Chari for Carnatic Music and thanked him for choosing the Bhavan as an associate. He also informed that it is befitting that Sri Murali inaugurates as he is the pioneer with whom Mr Chari had initiated his first venture at Music Academy


Sri K.N. Ramaswamy, Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, who was instrumental , delivered the Vote of Thanks and informed that Bhavan would look into the possibilities of installing an archive at Bhavans Rajaji Vidyashram, Kilpauk. At present the Archives is open between 4.30pm to 7.30 pm on all days at an enrolment fee of Rs.200/- .

BAIT 2012 - CHANGE MAKERS CONFERENCE

The Bait 2012 and Change Makers Conference was conducted by The Debate Club of Bhavans Rajaji Vidyashram on the 23rd July 2012 at Sri Venkata Auditorium , Bhavans Mylapore centre. Smt. D.Sabita, IAS, Principal Secretary School Education, Government of Tamilnadu was the Chief Guest and Sri. L.Sabaretanam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra, Presided over the function.


Smt. D.Sabita in her address emphasised that her desire to participate in the function stemmed from her enthusiasm in throwing light on the Governments participation, and contribution in grooming better citizens. While appreciating the efforts made by the Debate club, she also evinced her desire for the initiative to be extended to Government Schools.


Sri.Ajeeth Prasath Jain in his address informed that the Debate Club is the brain child of the BRV students and alumnus and is likely to spread its wings to Kolkata, Jaipur and Mumbai in the years to come.


Sri L.Sabaretnam in his address expressed his delight at the extensive preparations made by the participants and the Debate Club being excellent platform for thinkers who visualize the future.

119th Jayanthi of Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal ( Sage of Kanchi)

The 119th Jayanthi celebrations of Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal ( Sage of Kanchi ) in association with Veda Pata Nidhi Trust was held on 4th June, 2012 under the auspices of Neela Subramanian Endowment. The programme started with Pooja and Veda Parayanam and was followed by honouring of Vedic Pundits. On this occasion tributes were paid to (late) Ra. Ganapathy, (the author of Hindu Dharma ) and (late) T.S. Santhanam of (TVS Group). Sri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra welcomed the gathering and paid rich tributes to Sage of Kanchi who was the architect of Bhavans Chennai Kendra. Sri K. Parasaran, Vice-Chairman of Bhavans Chennai Kendra and Chairman of Veda Pata Nidhi Trust paid tributes to (late) T.S. Santhanam, who was a pillar of the Veda Pata Nidhi Trust which operates from Bhavans Chennai Kendra. Ra. Ganapathy was an ardent devotee of Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal and authored the famous book ? Deivathin Kural ? ( seven volumes ) in Tamil which was subsequently translated into English by RGK and published by the Bhavan as ? Hindu Dharma ?. Sri Charukesi Viswanathan, Dr. Krishnamurthy Sastrigal and Dr. Padma Subramanyam also paid tributes to Ra. Ganapathy. A message from Justice Sri K. Kannan, Judge, Punjab and Haryana High Court) was read during the occasion. The programme included a carnatic musical tribute to the Saint of Kanchi by Sri Sikkil Gurucharan and Troupe.

Sri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra welcomed the students. Sri R. Nataraj, IPS (Retd), Director, Tamilnadu Public Service Commission, inaugurated the training programme. While welcoming the students, SriL. Sabaretnam emphasized the Bhavans commitments towards upliftment of economically weaker section of the society. Sri Nataraj congratulated Bhavans efforts and wanted all the students to come out of their shell and face the world boldly. Students who are found suitable will be offered employment with TCS. Sri K.N. Ramaswamy, Director, Bhavans Chennai Kendra in his address said that the Kendra will soon upgrade the hardware and software and this training will be offered on a quarterly basis and extended to other South Indian centres very soon. TCS has also agreed to extend their support to Mumbai and Calcutta Kendra also.


ENTERPRENEUR COURSE :

The Kendra in association with The Indus Entrepreneurs ( TIE), Chennai organized a five day camp for school children at its premises. The focus was to develop entrepreneurial skill among the youth and 46 students participated in this programme . Under the guidance of very experienced faculty many innovative plans and proposals were submitted and discussed in detail by the students. All the students were awarded participation certificates at the end of the camp. In a valedictory function Sri Laxminarayanan, Vice-President, Cognizant Technologies Limited, Sri R. Balakrishnan I.A.S. Additional Chief Secretary and Special Officer, Enterpreneurship Development Institute, Ms. D. Sabitha, I.A.S. Secretary, School Education, Government of Tamilnadu, Sri L. Sabaretnam, Kendra Chairman were present and spoke well about the initiative taken by the Bhavan and TIE. Sri Sankaran P. Raghunathan, Dean, The National Management School who conducted training spoke about the course details and the benefits derived by the participants after completing the course.

Gandhi Institute Convocation and Free Employability Training Programme with Tata Consultancy Services.

The Convocation of the Bhavans Gandhi Institute of Computer Education and Information Technology (Batch 60) and launching of Free Employability Training Programme in association with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) was held on 22nd May, 2012. Sri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra, presided over the function and Sri N. Ravi, Director, Kasturi & Sons ( The Hindu ) was the Chief Guest and he distributed the certificates to the students and senior citizens received certificates. During this function the Bhavans Chennai Kendra announced its association with Tata Consultancy Services for providing employability training with TCS. Sri Praveen Kumar, Educational Associate, gave a brief account of GICE & IT and its achievements and in particular that of the Southern Region. Sri L. Sabaretnam, in his speech assured upgrading of the systems and also look into the possibilities of giving more advanced courses. He complimented the faculty for their dedication in imparting training. A representative each of the students and senior citizens group spoke very high about the Bhavans services and the benefits they derived. Sri Srinath Narayan, Associate Vice President of TCS explained in detail about the opportunity TCS is offering to the youth among the economically backward section of the society through the Bhavan. About 80 students registered for the free training programme (4 hours per day for 20 days) and this training will be extended to all future batches also. Sri N. Ravi in his address complimented the Bhavan for their yeomen service not only in the educational and cultural field but also in the social upliftment. He expressed his hope that the Bhavans new project at Tiruporur would materialize soon. Earlier Sri K.N. Ramaswamy, Director, Bhavans Chennai Kendra introduced the dignitaries. The programme was coordinated by Sri C.V. Balasubramanian, Coordinator, GICE & IT. The programme was well attended and the large gathering was entertained by a violin concert by Dr. M. Narmadha and Group.

SUMMER CAMP


The Kendra conducted a summer camp of two weeks duration for children in the age group of 8-14 years during month of May, 2012 at its premises. Around 30 students enrolled for this camp. The focus of the camp was on value education, arts and crafts, Yoga etc., At the end of the camp all the students were awarded participation certificates by Sri L. Sabaretnam, Kendra Chairman.


NEW KENDRA COMMITTEE

The Chennai Kendra Committee was reconstituted w.e.f. 14th April, 2012. The newly Reconstituted Committee met on 22nd April, 2012 and Sri K.N. Ramaswamy, Kendra Director informed the details of the Reconstituted Committee under the Chairmanship of Sri L. Sabaretnam, who was till recently its Vice-Chairman. Presiding over the function, Sri Sabaretnam expressed his sincere thanks to the President and the Executive Secretary of the Bhavan for having bestowed confidence by appointing him as the Chairman of the Kendra. He requested all the Members for their fullest cooperation. Sri Sabaretnam specifically emphasized the need to celebrate the Bhavans Platinum Jubilee Celebrations & 125th Birth Year of Bhavans Founder Kulapati K.M. Munshi in a grand manner. The Members introduced themselves and assured their cooperation to the Kendra Chairman in all his endeavors.


T.Nagar Sub-centre


Free Spoken Sanskti Courses :

Spoken Sanskrit classes at T.Nagar Centre was inaugurated by Sri K.N. Ramaswamy, Director, Chennai Kendra on 25th June, 2012. Sri K.N. Ramaswamy, in his address said the promoting Sanskrit education is a prime objective of the Bhavan and all help will be extended towards this. 35 students are taking advantage by this Free Course.


Vishnu Sahasranamam and Veda Chanting

As a part of the promoting cultural activities a weekend discourses are planned on a regular basis at our T.Nagar Sub-centre. To begin with Vishnu Sahasranamam and Vedi Chanting will be delivered by a reputed scholar, Smt. Ambujam Anantharaman, on Saturdays and Sundays. The programme was inaugurated on 9th June, 2012. Sri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Bhavans Chennai Kendra presided over the function and said that the Centre in the recent past has become more vibarant by conducting Yoga, Keyboard, B?Natyam etc., and more such activities are in the anvil.
